About Our Project.

We are a team of 4 graduate students at UCLouvain studying the properties of perovskite based solar cells in hopes of maybe one day, establishing this technology on our campus.

Several different kind of perovskite based solar cells exist but we will be focusing on methylammonium lead perovskite (CH3NH3PbI3), which is also known as MAPbI3. It has the particularity of being a organic/inorganic hybrid which leads to interesting properties.

For the duration of the spring semester of 2023, we will be conducting several studies. Firstly, we will focus on the scientific origin of the performance of MAPbI3 and make a comparison with traditional Si-based solar cells. Then, the life cycle analysis of the perovskite solar panel will be studied with the aid of SimaPro. Finally, we will realistically consider whether or not it is possible to install both technologies of solar panels on our campus in the form a video !

Project breakdown

Parallel Lines

1

Scientific properties of MAPbI3 perovskite

MAPI perovskite has been the perovskite causing the most ink to flow in the scientific community. It is important to study it thouroughly in order to assess whether MAPI based solar cells are promising in the future of solar energy

2

Life cycle analysis

Studying the environmental impact of a perovskite solar panel life cycle is important. We will assess if it answers to the 21st century challenges of a sustainable future and can be considered as future replacement of traditional silicon solar panel.

3

Video

Is it realistic to install solar panels on UCLouvain's campus? In this video, we discuss the challenges related to this project.
